The first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 between India and England at Headingley was a sight to behold in the world of cricket. England recorded a record-breaking run chase of 371 as they clinched victory by five wickets and took a 1–0 lead in the five-match series.
India kicked off the match with authority. Shubman Gill (147), Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), and Rishabh Pant (134) centuries drove them to a strong 471 in the first innings. England came back with 465, led by Ollie Pope's 106 and Harry Brook's 99, but Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket haul left India just ahead.
In their second innings, India seemed unfazed with KL Rahul scoring a century (137) and another by Pant (118), leaving England with a challenging target of 371. And then came a masterclass in contemporary Test batting.
Ben Duckett's devastating 149 opened the door for England's run-chase. His attacking strokeplay, particularly against Ravindra Jadeja, dismantled India's spin platform. Zak Crawley (65) and Joe Root (53)* made important contributions, with debutant Jamie Smith's unbeaten 44, including a six to take the victory over the line, adding the icing.
India's downfall resulted from familiar weaknesses: lower-order collapses, seven dropped catches, and failure to provide bowling support to Bumrah. Even with five centuries in both innings, India failed to convert good positions due to inability to capitalize on good starts and fielding mistakes.
This match also saw Shubman Gill make his debut as Test captain, and although his batting was breathtaking, his leadership was questioned. England's risky move to bowl first on a flat track paid dividends, and their aggressive attitude to chasing large totals—once taboo in Tests—was on show.
As the series progresses, India will have to rebuild in a hurry. With Bumrah's participation for the rest of the Tests doubtful, the onus is on the rest of the bowling group to deliver. England, on the other hand, appear solid and unified, their attacking "Bazball" approach ongoing to transform Test cricket.
